The Obscura37 brings the oldest form of imaging to modern cinema cameras by integrating a laser-etched pinhole into a rugged PL mount body cap. While it offers a unique, infinite depth-of-field aesthetic, its utility in a professional environment is defined by its extreme simplicity and high light requirements.
The Obscura37 is essentially a body cap with a hole in it. By utilizing the “Camera Obscura” effect, it eliminates the need for glass elements entirely. Light passes through a tiny aperture to project an image directly onto the sensor. The manufacturer describes it as an “ultra-precision embodiment” of Neolithic technology. In practical terms, it allows cinematographers to capture soft, impressionistic images with zero chromatic aberration and infinite focus, meaning everything from the pinhole to the horizon is equally sharp – or rather, equally soft.

The Pinhole Concept
Pinhole photography has existed since the dawn of the medium, often relegated to cardboard boxes or DIY plastic caps. In recent years, there has been a push to bring this “lo-fi” look to high-end cinema environments. The Obscura37 enters a market that has slowly moved away from homemade “drilled-out” caps toward precision-engineered tools that can withstand the rigors of a professional film set without introducing dust or debris directly onto the sensor.
The focal length of a pinhole is determined by the distance between the aperture and the sensor plane. To achieve the 37mm designation, Tribe7 utilizes the standard PL mount flange focal distance of 52mm and physically offsets the 9 micrometer substrate back into the mount throat to sit exactly 37mm from the sensor. This precision laser-etching is optimized for this specific distance to balance diffraction and sharpness. Because the material is so thin, it allows for a massive 80mm image circle. While it is true that a pinhole can project light almost indefinitely, physics dictates that illumination drops off significantly toward the edges. Despite the 80mm claim, there are not really any PL mount cameras that can take advantage of such a massive circle… yet. Even an Alexa 65 only requires around 60mm of coverage, but the extra overhead ensures even the largest current sensors stay within the usable “sweet spot” of the projection.
When discussing professional pinhole lenses, we have to look at the Zero Optik 35mm Pinhole. That lens was the first serious project from Alex Nelson, and it remains the “premium king” of the category. The Zero Optik version was the first to treat the pinhole as a legitimate filmmaking tool, offering a more robust housing and a proven track record on high-end sets. On the other end of the spectrum, you have the “Body Cap” lenses available on Amazon for fifty dollars or less. The Obscura37 sits in the middle, offering more precision than a cheap plastic cap but perhaps lacking the versatility and mechanical prestige of the Zero Optik offering.
Who is the Obscura37 for?
This is a niche tool for directors of photography looking for a specific aesthetic for flashbacks, dream sequences, or experimental music videos. It is not a lens for everyday use. Because the aperture is so small, you need a massive amount of light or a very high ISO to get a usable exposure. It is for the artist who wants something unique – something experimental!
Pricing and Availability
The Obscura37 is available directly from Tribe7’s shop website. At its current price point of $277, it is an accessible specialty item for a rental house or an individual owner-operator. Compared to the cost of a full cinema prime, it is inexpensive, but compared to the “five dollars and a drill bit” method, you are paying for the precision of that 9-micrometer laser-etched substrate.
At the end of the day, the Obscura37 is a well-made version of a very simple concept. It is refreshing to see a product that does not try to hide behind complex optical formulas, though the marketing language is certainly working hard to elevate a hole in a cap. If you need this look for a specific project and want a reliable PL mount solution, it is a solid choice. And of course, if your Obscura37 ever needs tuning or its focus gears re-greased, feel free to bring it into Duclos Lenses for a full service 😉
