In a market full of PL-adapters why not add one more. And actually, NiSi might have a good reason to do just that. Introducing the NiSi ATHENA Drop-In Filter Adapter, a PL-to-mirrorless mount adapter that brings behind-the-lens filtration to the Athena prime user base. No more rear-clearance anxiety and for that reason alone, it might just be worth the investment.
Key features of the NiSi Athena Drop-In Filter Adapter
The concept is simple and one that exists in many forms from other manufacturers. The main difference here being the longer than normal protrusion on the Athenas won’t hit the filter tray on this one. No front-mounted filters, no juggling step-up rings, and no buying a different filter for every front diameter across whatever other lenses you have. An adapter like this makes it easier and faster to switch between optics or filters. It’s a no brainer.
NiSi was, and is argueably still, primarily known for their filters so you can feel confident in that you are slotting in quality glass between your lens and the sensor. Supported filters include True Color VND, True Color CPL, Black Mist, Allure Streak, and FS ND. Better yet, the VND and CPL feature 0.8 MOD gearing.
With a starting base weight at 195 g, the adapter keeps things relatively lightweight with an aluminum alloy body, stainless steel mounts.
NiSi confirms compatibility with its entire Athena PL-mount prime lineup. Other PL lenses will work, provided their rear protrusions meet the adapter’s clearance requirements. It’s easy enough to check, but sufficed to say, the 25.8 mm of rear-protrusion clearance should be enough to accommodate a wide-array of glass.
Is it worth adding to your kit?
If you’re already in the NiSi ecosystem, this is an easy one to consider. If you aren’t, the upside is a compact setup that gives you quick access to high-end ND, polarization, and diffusion without the bulk of adding a matte box upfront.
The NiSi Athena Drop-In Filter Adapter is expected to begin shipping later this month. The adapter will be available with a standalone clear filter for $269 or in a kit that includes the True Color ND-Vario 1-5 stop and Black Mist 1/8 filters for $399.
