Three New Aizu Primes
The new 21mm, 100mm, and 125mm primes slot naturally into the existing lineup, adding more versatility to an already capable range. This isn’t a surprise drop as SIGMA HQ made it known from the very beginning that they intended to fill the line with more focal lengths beyond the ones introduced at launch. With a much fuller set, cinematographers have more reason to jump into the Aizu ecosystem to handle practically any production.
The 21mm provides a wider perspective for expansive environments, interiors, and immersive compositions, while the 100mm and 125mm extend the lineup into longer focal lengths for tighter framing and increased subject isolation.
The 125mm is perhaps the most interesting choice of the three, in my opinion. Rather than opting for the more traditional 135mm focal length found in many cinema lens sets, SIGMA chose 125mm. It’s not groundbreaking, but a little sidestep from the normal has me wondering if maybe the engineers did have some fun with developing these. I hope so. Merciful too it seems as pulling focus wide-open on any lens, especially telephotos, is as much of an adrenaline rush as tap dancing through a mine field.
Of course, the new focal lengths retain the core characteristics of the Aizu line. They match the existing lenses in design, maximum T1.3 aperture, large-format coverage, and overall performance, making them a seamless expansion of the set.
